History

The Computer Science & Engineering Department has a long tradition of being at the forefront of computing education. In 1972, the Accrediting Board for Engineering and Technology accredited a program which leads to a B.S. in Engineeringn with a major in Computer Science at UConn, as one of the accredited first programs in the field. At that time, the program was in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department. In the early 1980's the major was renamed Computer Science and Engineering.

In 1986, the Computer Science & Engineering department became a separate department in the School of Engineering. The Computer Science & Engineering program received dual accreditation from the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) and Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC) of ABET, 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD 21202-4012 - telephone: (410) 347-7700. and the Computer Science Accrediting Board (CSAB) in 1993.

Two undergraduate programs were added in 1999, a B.S. with a major in Computer Science and a B.S. in Engineering with a major in Computer Engineering. In 2001, the B.S. with major in Computer Science was accredited by the ABET's Computer Accreditation Commission(CAC). The Computer Science & Engineering degree program was also accredited by ABET's Engineering Accrediatation Commission (EAC) and Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC).

The Computer Science & Engineering program remains one of only a handful of programs in the country to receive dual ABET accreditation.
