CSI/CHASE Project Wins Final Four Accolade

The UConn Center for Hardware Assurance, Security and Engineering (Chase) and the Comcast Center of Excellence for Security Innovation (CSI) project was one of the final four finalists for the Northeast Project Award. Congratulations to Professors Mark Tehranipoor and John Chandy from Electrical and Computing Engineering, and Professors Laurent Michel and Jerry Shi from Computer Science & Engineering. They have all worked tirelessly on this project and are instrumental in raising UConn’s visibility in the area of computer systems security. The Information Security Executive (ISE) Northeast Executive Forum and Awards 2014 were held in New York City on October 9, 2014. The ISE® Northeast Award recognizes the information security executives and their teams who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in risk management, data asset protection, regulatory compliance, privacy, and network security. CSI research covers the following domains – Authentication, Hardware Security, Theft Prevention, Software Security, Anti-Tampering, Broadband Security, and Supply Chain and a layered approach to security in the age of “Internet of Things”. The center’s research initiatives focus on addressing broadband security starting from the customer’s home to the infrastructure used for transporting data to the equipment on the service provider’s premise. The goal is for a holistic approach to providing supply chain assurance of equipment starting from manufacturing to distribution to placement in customer homes. One of the main charters of CSI is to train and develop the next-generation security engineers through research opportunities, security contests/challenges and other relevant activities. The Center hosted Cybersecurity, Education & Diversity Challenge Week (CyberSEED) here at UConn in October where college students from around the country participated in hardware, software, and capture the flag challenges and attended sessions with distinguished speakers in various fields related to Cybersecurity.

The CHASE Center aims at developing comprehensive set of solutions to emerging security threats and assurance at transistor to system level. Transportation and utility infrastructures, financial and military systems, and the information systems supporting food, water, energy, manufacturing, aerospace, and health care activities are vulnerable to threats and issues.
