Private information retrieval (PIR) deals with the problem of protecting the privacy of a database client from a database server. A PIR protocol enables the scrambling of the client's query in such a way so that (1) it becomes incomprehensible for the database server, but still (2) the database server can process it so that it can return the correct response. This seemingly paradoxic problem can be solved using various cryptographic techniques that will be reviewed in today's lecture.
