Here is the website that i went to for my class presentation: http://www.3dlinks.com/gallery_fullview.cfm?id=3943 I chose this website because of the use of reflections between the colors off other balls as well as the reflection of the floor through the balls and the reflection of the balls on the floor. The spheres and squares are basic drawings, but the reflection, colors, and glimmer make the picture. Here is another site i went to: http://www.3dlinks.com/gallery_fullview.cfm?id=2005 This is the same kind of idea with the use of squares and spheres, but pay attention to the reflection of the floor through the spheres; very cool. A few more pictures on this site were the following by just replacing the number at the end of the last two websites: 2688 - again, it consists of spheres and black & white checkers, but now makes those spheres eyeballs with a great use of color, especially in the color part of the eye where there are fine details to make it look realistic. 2436 - although it is very basic, it makes a great demonstration of light pouring through a window. 3980 - it's a metallic silver foosball table with great reflections, especially in the ball, where you see the bar and the figures, as well as the infinite sky. Ok, now for a little bit of a change. I didn't present this following site in class because i went first and i wasn't sure where to go with this stuff, so i kept it to something that i thought would be more practical for us to make, but i guess that wasn't necessarily the case, so here's what i had originally found. This is a GREAT website: http://pixologic.com/index.cgi Once you're here, go to the left and click on gallery. There are som GREAT shots of faces. They are very fake looking, but at the same time pay so close detail to realism. I especially like 3 faces on the last row of the first set of thumbnails. The choice of color for the skin and hair are superb. The lighting is just right. The veins in the eyes and skin are unbelieveably accurate. On that last face, there is even a fading tone around the sides to bring out the middle of the picture and make it look almost real. Similar to that final fantasy website, there is an excellent mastery of wrinkles. And that's all I got. :) -Jed Goski TJP Some of this falls under the subject of `ray tracing'. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? The videogame I chose was Jedi Knights 2, which is currently in product by lucasarts and raven software. I was a big fan of the past games in this series a gallery of screenshots can be found on the lucasart's homepage at: http://www.lucasarts.com/products/outcast/html/gallery.html I took my favorite 4 screenshot and posted them on my page at: http://www.geocities.com/cse262project/images/pictures.html so I wouldn't have to scroll through the 50 screenshots looking for them Since these are all in game shots the graphics aren't as polished as the other pictures shown in class on friday. The first picture gives us a glare just like we would if a camera was pointed at a light source. The floor is also a convincing reflective surface. Lastly the stances of the characters look realistic. the second screenshot shows off the in game lighting affects. The light isn't unnatural looking or carelessly thrown in. the light all comes from sources like windows etc. the third screenshot shows that the game also pays attention to shadows. Thus making the the game more visually believeable. There is something unnatural to me about this shadow though. I found it interesting that the lightsaber disn't cast a shadow. It makes sense since the lightsaber is a light source itself, but then shouldn't the lightsaber also affect his shadow. the fourth screenshot is a shot of the model for the main character. I liked this picture because it shows off the in game textures. you can see folds in the clothes, wrinkles on his forehead etc. Mathew Rynich From - Mon Jan 28 12:22:29 2002 Received: from rwcrmhc53.attbi.com ([204.127.198.39]) by bilbo.engr.uconn.edu with SMTP (Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service Version 5.5.2655.55) id DVB9AZLN; Sat, 26 Jan 2002 12:26:44 -0500 Received: from ntd ([12.243.107.42]) by rwcrmhc53.attbi.com (InterMail vM.4.01.03.27 201-229-121-127-20010626) with SMTP id <20020126172900.VSTI10199.rwcrmhc53.attbi.com@ntd> for ; Sat, 26 Jan 2002 17:29:00 +0000 Message-ID: <001e01c1a6a7$08055140$8800a8c0@ntd> From: "Nhan T. There were images with water reflections and great textures on each of the websites listed there. After looking for a long time I decided on the image located at http://www.xhaven.net/themindofmadness/digital/award2.html and picked the image called "Broken Love" at http://www.geocities.com/makav_3d/brokenlove.html. I liked this image particularly because of its realistic nature, the way the light goes through the glass and creates interesting shadows such as were the crack is in the glass. I also really appreciated the texture of the table. The wood grain almost appears randomly generated. The same goes for the design on the side of the vase. All the other images that I saw were impressive but all of them seemed to have some characteristics that made me know that it was a computer generated graphic. This image is very simple and clean. It is very realistic. Eric Soares 045800498 CSE 275 TJP Some nice textures are at Cal Tech. I like looking at beautiful nature scenes, so real you can actually imagine and feel yourself there. My favorite thing, though, is the presence of something unreal. For example one of the pictures represents a clean peaceful beach in the night, at which almost anyone wouldn't mind escaping to. It looks very real, everything except for the giant planet lurking above the horizon. The clear night sky gives this amazing view of a distant object which seems out of this world. You right away know that you are not standing on the face of the Earth, but on another planet or in another dimension. This site is facinating because it shows realistic images with strong attention to lighting and detail, in imaginary worlds. These peaceful images have a way of relaxing the mind as well as amaze the audience. This is why this is my favorite url for graphical images. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. The shadows cast by the ant's skeleton are done very well, and the metallic surfaces are quite impressive. What really interests me most about this picture is that you can create anything you want with 3d software and still have the ability to make it look visually real. The second picture I displayed was: http://www.raph.com/3dartists/artgallery/defontaine_jacques1.jpg This is a picture of a subway stop in NY. This looks very realistic as well, and at first it is hard to tell if it is really a photograph or not. The lighting as well as the reflections on the tile surfaces look good, and the trash scattered on the floor helps to disguise repeated patterns in the drawing. I tried to find a photograph of the same station but I had no luck in finding one. The best thing I could find was a picture of a station taken from the same perspective. http://www.nycsubway.org/ind/6thave/ind6-2nd01.jpg These are obviously two different styles, but you can compare and see that the scaling is accurate, and the light reflecting off the pillars looks very similar. Overall what interests me most about this drawing is how close to "real" you can produce with 3d software. TJP Subway was impressively real. ------=_NextPart_000_117b_fe8_50ad-- From - Thu Jan 31 09:58:35 2002 Received: from uconnvm.uconn.edu ([137.99.26.3]) by bilbo.engr.uconn.edu with SMTP (Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service Version 5.5.2655.55) id D6D6XDAA; Tue, 29 Jan 2002 19:39:08 -0500 Received: from ichabod [137.99.132.233] by UConnVM.UConn.Edu (IBM VM SMTP Level 310) via TCP with SMTP ; Tue, 29 Jan 2002 19:40:32 EST Message-ID: <001601c1a927$1d3de9a0$e9846389@ichabod> From: "Nate Axtell" To: "Tom Peters" References: <3C4ED891.C8CB80F7@engr.uconn.edu> <3C557604.8A7078F3@engr.uconn.edu> Subject: did you get my email Date: Tue, 29 Jan 2002 19:43:20 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.50.4133.2400 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.50.4133.2400 X-Mozilla-Status: 8001 X-Mozilla-Status2: 00000000 X-UIDL: AAQf/vAAAAwRU4ZyqDsilmENOyY3MEqE Prof. Peters, I sent you the email for the presentation yesterday, did you get it? The images are compiled using the dataset gathered during the scan. Various algorithms are used to make 3D images using the dataset. Some of the images, for example the image in the last row, even have colors which are very realistic. Site 2 : Address: http://www.gemedicalsystems.com/rad/mri/case_studies/8_3clin_perf_diff.html Explanation: This site shows images taken by an MRI machine. As you can see, the image of the brain is taken with great details. One of the images even has colors added to it, to show blood volume in different parts of the brain. A doctor can easily recognize what is wrong with the brain, just by looking at the blood volume colors. The algorithms used for making 3D images are called Volume visualization algorithms. A single set of data gathered using a CT or MRI scan can be used to create different 3D images and also add colors and slicing and dicing capacity. The website i used in my oral pres. was http://everquest.station.sony.com/luclin/screenshots_100801.jsp My main points for being attracted to this page are the following: -The everquest world is an excellent representation of how vast and beautifully crafted a virtual world could be. The pictures shown on the listed page are examples of such. -Through graphics, people can create fantasy worlds that are interactive and pleasurable to be in. As technology increases, brilliant new worlds will be available to explore. -I have an obsession with the "Metaverse". The idea of a completely virtual internet was brought across to me by the book "Snow Crash" by Neal Stephenson. I've been an addict ever since. _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com From - Thu Jan 31 09:57:29 2002 Received: from uconnvm.uconn.edu ([137.99.26.3]) by bilbo.engr.uconn.edu with SMTP (Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service Version 5.5.2655.55) id D6D6XCNA; Tue, 29 Jan 2002 17:17:34 -0500 Received: from timp31.uconnvm.uconn.edu [137.99.131.242] by UConnVM.UConn.Edu (IBM VM SMTP Level 310) via TCP with SMTP ; Tue, 29 Jan 2002 17:18:58 EST Message-Id: <5.1.0.14.2.20020129165948.009f81a0@uconnvm.uconn.edu> X-Sender: TBP98001@uconnvm.uconn.edu X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Version 5.1 Date: Tue, 29 Jan 2002 17:05:55 -0500 To: Tom Peters From: Tim Place Subject: Re: e-mail assignment In-Reply-To: <3C557604.8A7078F3@engr.uconn.edu> References: <3C4ED891.C8CB80F7@engr.uconn.edu> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed X-Mozilla-Status: 8011 X-Mozilla-Status2: 00000000 X-UIDL: AAgd/vAAAAwRU4ZyqDsilmENOyY3MEqE Tim Place what interests me in computer graphics is how they can go from a simple wire frame and render and map it to make it look almost realistic. In the web site i looked at it showed exactly each step and how the picture changed. It starts with a wire frame someone created of a chess bored in a room with a window. Then it goes through 9 stages of rendering, shadowing, mapping, raytracing, reflection mapping, and finally ending on radiosity with a finished picture which looks pretty amazing from which it started. http://vcg.iei.pi.cnr.it/lescienze.html From - Thu Jan 31 09:57:29 2002 Received: from imo-m03.mx.aol.com ([64.12.136.6]) by bilbo.engr.uconn.edu with SMTP (Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service Version 5.5.2655.55) id D6D6XC3T; Tue, 29 Jan 2002 17:28:21 -0500 Received: from GarBri@aol.com by imo-m03.mx.aol.com (mail_out_v31_r1.26.) id u.10f.b549e3b (3966) for ; Tue, 29 Jan 2002 17:30:39 -0500 (EST) From: GarBri@aol.com Message-ID: <10f.b549e3b.29887c8e@aol.com> Date: Tue, 29 Jan 2002 17:30:38 EST Subject: Re: e-mail assignment To: tpeters@engr.uconn.edu MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: AOL 5.0 for Windows sub 139 X-Mozilla-Status: 0000 X-Mozilla-Status2: 00000000 X-UIDL: AAwd/vAAAAwRU4ZyqDsilmENOyY3MEqE Hi Dr. Peters, The website I chose was http://www.gg.caltech.edu/image_gallery.html . The reason I chose this site was because it contained some very good realistic pictures, especially the two of rooms in a house on the bottom of the page. These pictures demonstrate the use of both shadows and light, as well as the ability to portray objects in 3D. One interesting feature is the detail of the wood grain on the coffee table and the desk. Another picture that caught my eye was the metallic face picture. This one demonstrated the use of light really well. I also found it very fascinating how real the metal appeared. -Brian Sardo TJP Wood grain is tricky, but there are now good techniques. I'll show an early, bad example.
