In little more than half a century computing grew from a fledgling technical area to a cultural force that is shaping every aspect of society. Fueled by extraordinary technological innovation and a vibrant scientific vitality, computer science has enabled the transition to the digital age. This success involves also the responsibility to mitigate evident excesses and to improve individual enrichment.
Speaker Bio:
Franco P. Preparata joined the University of Illinois as a research associate in 1965. In 1970 he attained the rank of Professor, and in 1991 he joined Brown University as the An Wang Professor of Computer Science, a position from which he retired at the end of 2013. He authored, or co-authored, three textbooks (translated into several languages) and over 220 scholarly articles. Over the years his research has evolved from switching and coding theory to computational geometry, algorithm design, parallel computation, and computational biology. He has been a visiting professor in a large number of foreign institutions. A Fellow of the IEEE and of the ACM, in 1997 he received an honorary doctorate in Informatics Engineering from the University of Padova, Italy.
