Master of Engineering (M.Eng.)

Computer Science and Engineering M.Eng. degree program

The MENG CSE degree consists of 30 credits of graduate training emphasizing breadth, theory, and practice in a computing field. For more information, see the Master of Engineering in Computer Science and Engineering at the School of Engineering.

Admission requirements. Admission requires

  • a Bachelor’s degree,
  • two letters of recommendation, and
  • preparation in computing. The preparation in computing requirement can be met in two ways:
    • A B.S./B.A. or advanced degree in computing, or
    • preparation roughly consistent with an undergraduate computing degree. Recommended background, for those students entering the program without a related degree, includes the following:
      • Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Discrete Mathematics;
      • Competency in a high-level programming language: typically, at least two semesters of collegiate programming;
      • Operating Systems or a systems programming course (equivalent to CSE3100);
      • Design and Analysis of Algorithms (equivalent to CSE3500);
      • Computer Architecture;
      • some additional higher division computing classes such as Programming Languages, Security, ML/AI, Theory of Computing, Compilers, etc.

Further comments on admissions requirements:

  • GRE scores not required.
  • Successful candidates have at least a 3.0 GPA in undergraduate coursework, with strong performance in STEM courses.

Data Science M.Eng. degree program

The CSE Department offers a Master of Engineering (MEng) in Data Science, which includes courses on the fundamental theory and practice of data science including topics from big data analytics, machine learning, data visualization, and data mining in an accessible online and distance learning modality. The M.Eng. degree requires 30 credits, including core computer science and engineering courses and additional courses in engineering mathematics, information management, project planning and management, a Capstone project, and flexibility with technical electives. Admission requirements. Admission requires

  • a Bachelor’s degree,
  • two letters of recommendation, and
  • preparation in mathematics and programming reflecting:
    • Multivariable Calculus; Linear Algebra;
    • Fluency in a high-level programming language;
    • Probability theory or statistics, typically consistent with one semester of rigorous undergraduate study (equivalent to, e.g., MATH3160 or STAT3025).
    • Further recommendations:
      • Python experience;
      • Data Structures and Algorithms (akin to CSE2050);
      • Design and Analysis of algorithms (akin to CSE3500).
